Rex rally late for 8-5 win

Tribune-Star/Austen LeakeHere it comes: Terre Haute Rex pitcher Kaleb Huxford pitches during Sunday’s game against Champion City at Bob Warn Field.

The Terre Haute Rex used high-powered seventh and eighth innings Sunday night to secure an 8-5 win over Champion City in Prospect League baseball at Bob Warn Field.

The Rex, who trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, scored six runs in the next two frames to lock in the victory.

Champion City struck first in the contest as the Rex defense put several runners in scoring position in the top of the third inning. The visitors scored two runs as Chase Carney and Jacob Freeland managed to find their way home off a double by Bo Seccombe.

The Rex were quick to retaliate, though, as Aaron Beck hit a triple to bring Ethan Hunter home. Beck managed to score on a sacrifice fly from Ross Indlecoffer to tie the game up at 2-2 after three innings.

Both teams managed several strong defensive performances through the fourth and fifth innings as neither pitching staff gave up a run. It wasn’t until the sixth inning that the Kings regained their lead off of a Jordan Bailey hit as Jon Erhard scored. They struck again in the top of the seventh inning.

With two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Indlecoffer hit a three-run home run to claim a 5-4 lead in the contest. Indlecoffer was a big part of the Rex effort throughout the evening with one hit, one run and four RBI.

Bailey scored in the eighth inning for the Kings, tying the game at 5-5.

With a dramatic finish closing in on the Rex lineup, the hometown team started the bottom of the eighth inning with a double by Mason Speirs. Speirs advanced to third on a wild pitch before Ethan Hunter scored Speirs on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Mitchell Garrity hit a single later in the frame to score Carter Bridges before being brought home himself on a walk by Austin Weiler. Incoming thunderstorms forced the second delay of the game and resulted in a termination of the ninth inning, giving the Rex an 8-5 victory over Champion City.

Beck and Hunter each had two hits, two runs and an RBI in the win.
