Terre Haute South used a strong second half to defeat Northview 53-36 in girls high school basketball Tuesday night at South.

The teams battled to a 25-25 tie after two periods and the host team outscored the Knights 28-11 in the second half to get its fifth victory in seven starts.

South used a 10-1 run to build a 35-26 lead midway through the third period and took a 41-32 lead into the final frame when it used a 9-2 spurt to go up 50-34.

South ran out to a 5-0 lead at the start, but Lindley Higham, Emily Bell and Kylie Fendrick each picked up two fouls in the first period and the score was tied 11-11 after eight minutes.

Northview took a 19-14 lead on two free throws by Mikayla Rowan. The Braves came back to take a 25-21 lead, but Northview tied it 25-25 on a bucket by McKenzi Kumpf.

Tasia Brewer led the winners with 16 points and seven boards. Higham finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Bell added five points  and seven rebounds.

Kumpf was 6 of 7 for the game and led the 2-4 Northview team with 12 points and three steals. Rowan had nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals and Mallory Smith had eight points.

“Like other games, we hurt ourselves with turnovers and missed free throws. We emphasized defense and rebounding the second half so that we could get in transition,” said South coach Cara Stuckey.

Northview coach Scott Buell said his team was getting better before the game and was pleased with the first half in particular.

“We had an excellent first half but got a little tired in the second half. Higham's size caused us some problems. … We gained confidence tonight,” said the coach.

The Knights are at Rockville on Thursday. South is at Indianapolis North Central for a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference contest Saturday.

“North Central has nice talent,” said Stuckey.
