Wayne Newton Post 346 used strong batting performances throughout the lineup to rout Danville Post 118 7-3 Thursday night in American Legion baseball at Don Jennings Field.
Danville struck quickly in the top of the first inning as Blake Mills was able to get on base behind a walk before a base hit from Kaleb Gentry moved him to third base. A wild throw to first allowed Mills to continue down the baseline to home plate, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Wayne Newton was unable to find any luck at the plate until the bottom of the second inning when Will Kelly drilled a double to put himself into scoring position. Danville walked Cole Whitlock and then gave up a second double in the inning, this time from Pierson Barnes, bringing in Kelly and Whitlock.
The bottom of the fourth proved to be fruitful for Wayne Newton again; another double from Kelly put him and Tristan Elder in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Whitlock brought in Elder and a single from Garrett Loyed scored Kelly for his second run of the game. Kelly finished the contest with three runs and three hits in four at-bats.
A run from Danville’s Mills in the top of the sixth inning trimmed the deficit down to 4-2. Post 346 was fast to return the favor though as Kelly scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning, this time off a single from Whitlock.
Post 346 continued to have its way at the plate, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ethan Newman hit a leadoff double before his brother Evan brought him home with a double to extend the team’s lead to 6-2. Elder hit the third double of the inning to score Evan Newman and Wayne Newton found themselves with a dominant 7-2 advantage with just two innings left.
Danville tried to force its way back into the game in the eighth inning, getting five runners on base with three walks and two singles. However, timely defensive plays and strikeouts by Kelly allowed just one runner to score for the Warriors. Elder closed the game out on the mound for Wayne Newton, giving the team its second win of the season.
Barnes finished the game with one hit two RBI for Wayne Newton. Loyed also finished the contest with one hit and two RBI.
