The Riverton Parke Panthers are playing the way preseason polls predicted and doing so at the right time of the season.

Riverton Parke rolled over the host Linton Miners 51-35 on Friday night for its fifth straight victory and ninth in the last 12 contests. Riverton Parke (12-9) plays Attica at the Class A North Vermillion Sectional on Tuesday.

“We’re playing pretty well. We’re really playing the way we thought we could play all season. It took us a little while with injuries to get some roles we needed to get there and [get] people healthy. Evan Lunsford and Tyler Morgan are really playing well for us inside and when they’re playing well we’re tough matchup,” Riverton Parke coach Michael Menser said after the regular-season finale.

Lunsford paced the Panthers with 18 points and nine rebounds, followed by Morgan with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Derek Cleghorn added 10 points.

Linton, 13-5 at one point this season, goes into the Class 2A Sectional at Paoli on a three-game losing streak.

“The thing that is scary is Riverton Parke is similar to what we’re going to face in Paoli. We’re going to have to find a way to play better inside defense,” Linton Coach Darren Clayton said.

Daniel Allen paced Linton with 10 points.

Led by Lunsford and Morgan, Riverton Parke dominated play inside all night on both ends of the floor. Riverton Parke won the rebounding battled 34-16 and, by getting the ball inside, the Panthers shot 60 percent (21-of-35) from the floor.

“We always want to start inside out and Derek [Cleghorn] and Trent [Fox] did a good job getting [the ball] into [Lunsford and Morgan] tonight and fortunately for us they were able to score on their man,” Menser said.

Defensively, the Panthers held the Miners to 29 percent (14-of-47) shooting from the field.

Riverton Parke took control with an 10-0 run in the final 1:20 of the first quarter and first two minutes of the second. Lunsford hit two free throws to put the Panthers up 21-11 before Ethan Brewer scored a three-point play for the Miners with 5:15 left in the first half.

The Panthers led 27-16 at halftime and pulled out to a 38-23 lead in the third quarter. Riverton Parke’s lead hit 22 points in the fourth quarter.
