Terre Haute North will send two athletes from its girls swimming team to the IHSAA state finals this weekend.

Senior diver Kylie Hutson will make her fourth and final trip to the state meet and freshman freestyler Katie Guell will make her first appearance at the IUPUI Natatorium for Coach Brian Heaton.

Hutson won her first sectional last weekend before taking fifth in regional action Tuesday. She gets started with preliminary action Saturday morning. Hutson’s best finish at the state meet was 10th her sophomore season.

“My goal is to get top eight,” she said. “I’m hoping to get a medal and an all-state.”

Guell won the 500-yard freestyle race at Bloomington, breaking her best in the event by three seconds. She may have to shave off a few more seconds to reach Saturday’s finals. Guell competes tonight.

“Really, I’m just extremely excited,” Guell said after Thursday’s workout. “I had no expectation of getting this far, especially my freshman year. I’m just happy to be here.”

Guell has always been a distance swimmer, her best event being the mile swim, which isn’t an IHSAA event.

“I’m seeded 22nd at the moment. If I even get 16th, I’ll be absolutely thrilled,” she said. “That’d be getting into the consolation finals and that would be just awesome for me.”

Heaton said the experience that Guell picks up this weekend will help her career, regardless of how she does.

“If we could get in top 16, that’d be great,” he said. “If not, we’ll take the experience for what it is. It should be very exciting. We don’t have overblown expectations. She’s in a great heat with people she can race.”

Hutson will compete against 32 divers, with the cut being made to 20 after five attempts. Then the cut is made to 16 divers, who all get three final attempts.

“Nerves aren’t quite as big a deal as her first time,” Heaton said. “She’ll go in there with a confident attitude for what she needs to do. [Kylie] dives very consistent. It was great to see her get that [sectional] win. Her experience definitely help us out. She knows what to expect.”
