Neuqua Valley (Ill.) took first place in the boys Midwest Regional championship race followed by Elmhurst (Ill.) to qualify for the Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Ore., on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course.

The high school club teams from Illinois edged Medina, Ohio and Fishers to earn the automatic berths.

In the girls regional championship, Lake Central (Ind.) edged Westfield (Ind.) for the team title. Both teams earn automatic bids to the NTN championships.

Chris Derrick of Neuqua Valley was the boys individual winner, in a course 5,000-meter record time of 14 minutes, 54 seconds. Annette Glaz of Stagg won the girls race in a time of 18:17.4, also a course record.

Kristy Twitchell of Terre Haute South running club finished 63rd place in the varsity race with a time of 20:18.4.

The Patriot Running Club, with runners from Terre Haute North High School, won the girls junior varsity race. Lindy Jones (19:59.9), Jordan Cresgy (22:27.9), Liz Marietta (23:32.5) were the top three finishers in the race, Shelby Tatman (25:08) was fifth overall and Katie Carney (27:04) was seventh.

In the boys junior varsity, the Patriot Running Club was third as a team out of four teams. Brandon Query was fifth overall with a time of 16:56.8, Jon Davis was 12th with a time of 17:44.8, Kyle Bays was 24th in 19:01.8, Chad Braun was 25th in 19:03.2, Ryan Payonk was 29th in 19:30.8, Zack Raubuck was 31st in 19:40.3, and Shane Roman was 33rd in 20:04.9.

For Home School Union, Teal Wigginton ran a 21:37 in the girls varsity race for 86th place. In 93rd was Rachel Butler in 22:53.1, Aberlyn Sweetland in 94th in 22:54.5 and Hannah Ruckers was 95th in 22:59.2.

In the boys varsity race for Home School Union, Kyle Sweetland led the way with an 175th place-finish in a time of 18:21.3 and Kevin Sweetland was 182nd in 18:55.3.

Maryiam Houston ran a 23:54 in the girls freshman race for Patriot Running club.

John Mascari of the Patriot Running Club won the boys freshman race with a time of 17:05. Brenden Longfellow was 26th in 19:16.7, and Dylan Bertsch was 28th in 19:47.8.
