Terre Haute South had four players under 40 on Wednesday in its first regular-season boys high school golf match, defeating Northview 148-159 at Rea Park.

South junior Thomas Goss finished with a 3-under-par 33 for medalist honors. He had four birdies and a bogey in his round.

He said the course played tough with the greens being hard and fast.

Jackson Jarvis and Sam Harbaugh each shot 38 and Shelby Stewart carded 39 to round out the South scoring.

South coach Chris Cassell echoed Goss’ comments. “[Our] score was very good for the tough conditions,” he said.

The Braves will be in the Washington Catholic Invitational at Country Oaks, site of the regional, on Saturday. Four spots are set in the lineup with qualifying this week determining the fifth player.

South will be favored to annex its second tournament championship after winning the Riddell National Bank Invitational at Forest Park last week.

Goss should contend for medalist honors on a course where he has scored well. He bested Adam Schenk of South Knox for second medalist honors in the regional last season and was in a playoff for individual honors the previous year.

Drew Snyder shot 38 to lead the Knights and Daniel Eaglin had 39 while Larry Knight and Jarrod Short each had 41 for the Knights’ scoring.

“We had a goal of being under 160. We did that. I am pleased,” said coach Scott Buell.

He had five players competing in their first varsity match and South had three in their initial varsity action.

Northview plays Riverton Parke and Rockville today at Forest Park and will take advantage of a weekend free of tournament action to shoot a practice round Saturday at Salt Creek at Nashville, site of the Western Indiana Conference tournament.

Both teams will be back at Rea Park on April 24 for the South Invitational.
