Alex Baker’s 6-under-par score of 134 has been certified as the winning score in last weekend’s state American Legion Golf Tournament.
The recent West Vigo High School graduate competed with four of his Viking teammates and other golfers sponsored by West Terre Haute Post 501 in the tournament played on the Post 6 golf course.
Baker, who will play at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, beat two professionals by a shot in a tournament that included golfers from around the state.
He will receive his trophy this fall at the American Legion state convention at the J.W. Marriott in Indianapolis.
• Sycamore schedule revealed — Indiana State has revealed its schedule for the 2019 cross country season, ISU track and field & cross country program director Angela Martin announced this week.
“I’m really excited about our 2019 cross country schedule and believe it sets our team up for strong races at the Missouri Valley Conference championships and NCAA regional meets,” said Kyle Walsh, ISU's associate head coach for cross country.
ISU will host three meets this season at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, beginning with the John McNichols Invitational on Sept. 21 which is named in honor of the late former longtime ISU coach. Prior to that, the Sycamores will open the season at Valparaiso for the Crusader Open on Sept. 6.
On Oct. 19, the Blue and White will return home to host the 2019 Under Armour Pre-National Invitational, where teams will get a chance to preview the LaVern Gibson Championship Course for the 2019 NCAA championships. The week after the Pre-National meet, ISU will head to Indianapolis to participate in the Bulldog Invitational, the last tune-up before the MVC championships Nov. 2 in Valparaiso.
Once the MVC championships have concluded, ISU will make the trek up north to Wisconsin, which hosted the 2018 NCAA championships, for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 15.
The NCAA championships will make their way to the Gibson course Nov. 23 and it will mark the 13th time that the national meet has come to eastern Vigo County since 2002.

• Miners 11, Rex 8 — At Bob Warn Field, the Terre Haute Rex's two-game winning streak ended in Wednesday's second game of a Prospect League doubleheader, but at least the home team didn't go down without a fight.
After the score was tied 0-0 through two innings, the visitors scored in each of the last five frames of the seven-inning game as Rex pitchers gave up nine walks in addition to the Miners' seven hits.
The Rex's Brayden Frazier had a two-run single in the bottom of the third inning that cut the lead to 4-2, but it was an 11-2 game going into the bottom of the seventh. The Rex rallied for six runs, but they weren't enough.
Brendan Sher was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs for the Rex, while Cole Albers was 1 for 1 with a double and two runs and Frazier finished 1 for 2 with three runs batted in.
