According to the website, “Bring Back the Mile,” the mile run is as American as baseball, apple pie and the Fourth of July.

Mile road races — an Independence Day Terre Haute tradition since 1982 — have more than doubled in popularity in the 21st century.

More than 350 competitors were treated with a cool mist as they raced down Brown Avenue on Monday morning. Some battled their fellow age groupers, some for middle school pride and many looking to beat their previous best in the the annual Fast Track Mile.

Bobby Thompson was the fastest overall, using a strong kick to surge past defending men’s champion Peter Davis for a time of 4 minutes, 32 seconds. The fastest woman was Brittany Neeley, an Indiana State University miler, who defeated defending champion Cassie Busch with a time of 5:12.6.

Thompson is a former NCAA Division III qualifier in the 800 meters and the 24-year-old is still pursuing a career on the track. He and Davis, who runs at Pomona College in Claremont, California, are both coming off competitive track seasons in the spring.

“He kind of paced it perfectly for me. It was right around the times I was hoping and being an 800 runner, I usually have pretty good turnover. I had him in my sights and with about 200 to go, I probably closed at about 30 seconds,” Thompson said. “Awesome event. I’ll definitely be back.”

Davis is fit coming off a strong season — helping Pomono take sixth in the D-III NCAA cross country meet — but “I haven’t done a lot of speed work lately so I didn’t have the legs at the end,” he said.

Neeley was also a first-timer and showed up to register for the race, which costs $20. But Neeley told Austin it was $10 to race so only one of the two could race.

“We sent me in but we all warmed up together. It was kind of a team effort,” Neeley said.

Neeley hopes the race proves to be a confidence builder for her.

“I started to get a little nervous at the start line. I know Cassie and so we were talking before the race. At the halfway point, I was almost in fourth and there was some betting about who was going to win. I started to catch her. My sister [Bethany], Taylor and my boyfriend were at the 400 and said, it’s downhill, just go so I just went for it. I think it’s a big improvement to have the confidence to win,” Neeley said.

Busch, formerly Hunt, was an All-American at Illinois out of North Putnam. Her husband Roger was the top male Masters runner with his time of 5:23.4 that edged Terre Haute’s Paul Clapp by a second.

“It’s a fun race. We live in Crawfordsville. I haven’t been running much at all. Thought I’d come down and see how it went. Nice mist this morning made it nice,” Busch said.

Chikag Castle won the women’s masters with her time of 5:48.7. Castle made the drive from Indianapolis for the second straight year after friends brought her along last year. Running everything from 5Ks to marathons ever year, Castle has added the mile road race to her annual schedule.

“These races are becoming popular. I just hoped to be under six minutes,” Castle said.
