Those ‘facts’ you cite may really be just fiction

“Protesting doesn’t make us evil bigots” reads the title of Marilyn Walker’s opinion in the Jan. 20 Tribune-Star. I agree “protesting” doesn’t automatically make one an evil bigot, but actions and words can. For instance, she writes “It is a fact that homosexuality causes a 25- to 30-year decrease in the life expectancy.” Fact? This is the same nonsense that fanatics have been recycling for years.

This misinformation primarily comes from Paul Cameron, who is a psychologist/hatemonger that claims his studies show proof of a much lower life expectancy among homosexuals. His studies are widely known to be completely unscientific.

In 1983 his membership was dropped by the American Psychological Association for a violation of the Preamble to the Ethical Principles of Psychologists. Then in 1984 the Nebraska Psychological Association formally disassociated itself from the representations and interpretations of scientific literature offered by Mr. Cameron.

Finally, in 1985 the American Sociological Association stated, “Dr. Paul Cameron has consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented sociological research on sexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism” and noted that “Dr. Paul Cameron has repeatedly campaigned for the abrogation of the civil rights of lesbians and gay men, substantiating his call on the basis of his distorted interpretation of this research.”

Ms. Walker, I’m sure you were just repeating misinformation given to you by another fanatic, but if you in fact were aware of where your propaganda came from, do you still stand by it? Do you stand behind Mr. Cameron? You may not be an evil bigot, but you were quoting “facts” from a proven liar, so I find it ironic that you are preaching about morals. It is interesting how you work hate speech into a sermon about morals.

Opinions like Ms. Walker’s and others are really helping me understand how the far right thinks (I use “think” very loosely). They wake up, get the lies for the day ready, claim to be holier then everyone else, all the while discriminating against anyone who doesn’t promptly agree with their filth. The only thing that changes with time is the group of people being attacked and the level of hypocrisy.

So when you all write in with more nonsense and call me a “liberal” like it’s a bad word feel free to put “proud” in front of it. All of us on the left are insane, don’t you know? We believe in crazy things like social programs, protecting the environment, health care for all Americans, separation of church and state, multilateral rather than unilateral foreign policy, higher taxes for the wealthy, and most of all civil liberties.

I can’t think of being called anything better than a liberal, but what do I know, I’m a queer-lover, right?

Excellent essay on evolution-ID

Congratulations to Mr. Reggie McConnell for his excellent letter published Sunday, Jan 29, concerning the evolution/intelligent design controversy. It's good to see such a well-reasoned and well-stated letter I think most Christians would wholeheartedly agree with.
