Melvin Duane Cooper, 74, of Terre Haute, passed away at 6:05 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital Emergency Room. He retired from Eli Lilly after over 30 years of employment as a process technician. He was born May 19, 1938, in Iola, Kan.
Survivors include his companion, Connie Eikenberry; two sons, Charles Cooper and Gary Cooper and his wife Karen; a sister, Brenda Newburn; a brother, Gerald Shimshak; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a nephew, Harry “Slim” Newburn; and special stepson and friend, Danny Funkhouser. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cleta Shimshak; and a sister, Lonita Cooper.
He was a very proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and had served as an MP on the military base near Las Vegas. He also was a member of the Marine Corps League Joseph A. Bray Detachment 471 at Terre Haute and West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge 687 Free & Accepted Masons, and he enjoyed playing golf.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park with military graveside rites provided by the Marine Corps League Joseph A. Bray Detachment 471. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and prior to services Tuesday.
