A Farmersburg man died this afternoon when a tree he was cutting in his back yard split and part of it fell on him.
Authorities report that Russ Myers, 51, died instantly in the 1:30 p.m. incident on West Sawmill Road just east of U.S. 41 at Farmersburg.
Sullivan County Coroner Jeff Griffith pronounced Myers dead at the scene after he was extricated by Thunderbird firefighters.
Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom said the incident was not witnessed, but police were told that Myers was working on a tree that had been damaged by recent high winds.
The tree apparently split and fell, pinning Myers under the tree, Cottom said.
Myers was well-known in the community as an official for both basketball and softball, Cottom said.
In fact, Myers was scheduled to officiate at a North Knox athletic event on Tuesday evening.
A 51-year-old Farmersburg man has died in an accident at his home today.
The man was cutting down a tree in his back yard when the tree fell landing on him, reports Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sullivan County coroner.
The man's name has not yet been released, Cottom told the Tribune-Star.
