Charges are pending against an Edgar County, Illinois, woman who was injured Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash that left another driver dead and two children injured.
Illinois State Police report Carrie Lee Collier, 39, of Paris, Illinois, was taken via helicopter to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment following the 1:52 p.m. crash on U.S. 150 about two miles west of the Illinois-Indiana state line. Charges for Collier are pending, ISP reports.
Collier was driving a westbound 2013 Chrysler that crossed the center line for an unknown reason and collided head-on with an eastbound 2009 Chrysler minivan driven by Beverly A. Whitkanack, 78, of Paris.
Whitkanack was pronounced dead at the scene. Two children from Terre Haute who were passengers in Whitkanack's minivan were also taken to an area hospital for treatment. A 6-year-old girl in the minivan was properly restrained in a car seat, and a 15-year-old girl in the minivan was also wearing a seatbelt in the back seat of the minivan. Their names will not be released due to their juvenile status, police report.
Both Collier and Whitkanack were wearing seatbelts, and air bags deployed in both vehicles. The road was closed for several hours Sunday for investigation of the crash.
