The Riverton Parke Panther cheer team won its level/division title in the 2007 Warrior Cup Cheer and Dance Classic in Danville, Ind., on Oct. 21.

Team members are captain Chelsea Butler, Rachel Jenkins, Amanda Johnson, Haley Archer, Diana Smith, Chelsea Lowe, Mackenzie Burns, Wesley Thomas, Toby Voorhies, Katelynn Rewers, Amber Ellis, Courtney Butler, Jillian Jackson, Katie Van Duyn, Faith Stevens and Kelcee Hudson.

The team, coached by Trisha Foncannon of Clinton and Pam Graves of Rosedale, competed in the level three co-ed varsity division. About 40 school and all-star squads, individual/duet performances and stunt group entries represented Indiana schools and gyms. Levels and divisions separate competitive groups based on their tumbling and stunt skill level, size and type of team.

“These kids have worked very hard all season to reach their goal of becoming a competitive team,” Foncannon said. “They have pushed through injuries, hectic schedules and their own self-doubt to become a team that believes that it can win.”

Graves agreed.

“I'm always amazed at what these kids can do,” she said.

The Panthers will participate in one more competition before the end of the 2007-2008 season in addition to the team’s varsity and junior varsity basketball game responsibilities. They placed seventh in the Putnam County Fair Cheerleading Competition in July.

Also at the competition in Danville, the RP cheer team stunt group — part of the varsity cheerleading team — won the group stunting category.

Stunt groups compete in a specialty division at cheerleading competitions and are generally made up of four or five members. Their routines are one minute in length and choreographed to music.

Stunt team members are Johnson (junior of Terre Haute); Thomas (sophomore of Montezuma); and Van Duyn, Jackson and Rewers (freshmen of Rosedale).

In addition, 10 Riverton Parke High School cheerleaders earned special recognition during the 2007 football season.

Chelsea and Courtney Butler, Rewers, Jackson, Archer, Jenkins, Stevens, Lowe, Johnson and former team member Jade Tagney earned the Panther Spirit Award for their game performances.

Chelsea Butler, a junior from Rosedale, is varsity captain and a three-year member of the Panther cheer team. She is an alternate member/spotter for the Panther competitive stunt group.

Rewers is a first-year team member, also cheers competitively for the Energy Unlimited Rockets. She was a member of the Riverton Parke volleyball team. Rewers won this award twice during the football season.

Jackson, formerly of Terre Haute and first-year team member, was selected to the National Cheerleading Association’s All American Team in July.

Archer, a junior from Rosedale, is a two-year member of the cheer team. She is also a member of the Riverton Parke Panther Guard and a former member of the Energy Unlimited Rockets cheerleading team.

Jenkins, a junior from Rosedale, is a first-year team member. She was also a member of the Riverton Parke varsity volleyball team.

Stevens, a freshman from Montezuma, is a first-year team member of the Panther cheer team.

Courtney Butler, a freshman from Rosedale, is a first-year member of the Panther cheer team.

Johnson is a three-year member of the Panther cheer team.

Tagney, a freshman from Montezuma, is a first-year member of the Panther cheer team.

The Spirit Award is the highest game honor given by the team’s coaches. Spirit Award winners are selected for each game after being evaluated in the following areas: spirit, enthusiasm, perfection of stunts and material, jumps and tumbling.
