The Terre Haute Parks and Recreation has secured a substantial grant that officials say will cover the cost of the repairs of one park playground.

During the Terre Haute Park and Recreation board meeting Wednesday, board member Gordon Bryan announced that a grant was secured from the Oakley Foundation to pay for the cost of the recent resurfacing of the smaller playground (Oakley Playground) in Deming Park. The grant was for $116,079, which was the cost of the resurfacing project completed in November.

Parks officials are thankful for the contribution, Bryan said. He also told the meeting attendees that semi-annual reports will be sent to the Oakley Foundation. These reports will "keep them in the loop" on the maintenance of the playground and any other updates.

"They are glad to partner with us to keep it in as good a shape it can be," he said at the afternoon meeting, held at Torner Center in Deming Park.

In addition to the Oakley Playground — completed in fall of 2003 — the Hollie and Anna Oakley Foundation has also supported other projects locally including, Ivy Tech's Oakley Auditorium, Oakley Place at Indiana State University and a Terre Haute Children’s Museum exhibit.

The board also:

• Approved the cost for part of the work needed for an electrical upgrade at Deming Park. The cost was $18,786.81. Work is to be performed by Duke Energy.

• Renewed the contract of David Kennedy, a golf professional at Rea Park Golf Course. Kennedy is starting his 11th year in this capacity.

• Approved a resolution that established new golf fees for Rea Park and Hulman Links for the 2015 season.

"Overall, we did a $10 raise on season passes and pretty much $2 across the board on the remaining [items]" with a few areas raised a bit more, said Superintendent Eddie Bird.

For example, a family [season] pass at Rea Park will cost $1,310, up $10 from last year. At Hulman Links, the family pass will cost $1,440. "Green fees" and 10-play passes for Rea Park and Hulman Links vary in cost.
