A fire that destroyed one home and damaged another Friday morning was still under investigation that evening, with authorities leaning toward terming it accidental.

According to a media release issued by the Terre Haute City Fire Department, heavy flames were coming from the rear of a home at 615 S. 20th St. about 5:56 a.m.

The home was later described as a “total loss,” according to the report.

A 55-year-old male and 56-year-old female were inside at the time of the fire, which is believed to have started in the rear bedroom, according to the report.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist with the relocation of the residents.

The fire, which also damaged the siding and roof of a neighboring home at 621 S. 20th St., took about 45 minutes to control.

Department investigators were still working to establish a cause Friday evening, but the release said they were leaning towards terming it accidental.
