No one was hurt but a two-story home appeared to be a total loss after a fire on Terre Haute’s north side late Friday afternoon.

The fire, which started around 5 p.m., was still burning with heavy smoke pouring from the home near 15th Street and Grand Avenue in a residential area north east of the 12 Points district.

Several Terre Haute fire trucks and firefighters were on the scene.

“Nobody was inside,” said Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher. Some dogs were on the property and one threatened firefighters, but no dogs were hurt, he added.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, said fire department investigator Jeff Hodges. Two juveniles who lived at the home were playing basketball with two other youths when the fire started, he said. The juveniles attempted to put the fire out, but it spread quickly and they called 911, Hodges said.

Dozens of neighbors looked on as firefighters used a ladder truck and hoses to battle the blaze late into the afternoon.

Terre Haute Police Department vehicles blocked streets around the home. Trans-Care also responded to the scene.
