CARLISLE -- A Wabash Valley Correctional Facility officer was arrested this morning by Correctional Police on trafficking and related charges.
Aaron McQuaid, 25, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, is initially charged with trafficking with an inmate, a Level 5 felony, official misconduct, a Level 6 felony, according to a news release from the state prison.
During questioning by Officer Kevin Allen and Investigator Randy VanVleet, McQuaid reportedly admitted having tobacco in a pill bottle, a suboxone strip in his wallet along with over $180, correctional officials said.
Investigators allege he also admitted to previously smuggling 50 suboxone strips into the facility for an offender, in exchange for a $500 payoff.
Suboxone is an opioid alternative generally used to lessen the effect of opioid withdrawal, but it can produce a euphoric feeling or "high."
McQuaid was fired and stripped of his uniform prior to transport to the Sullivan County Jail. Bond was set at $23,000.
Investigators have not released the name of the offender involved pending the outcome of their criminal investigation.
“A dirty officer tarnishes the good reputation of our staff and we intend to ask Sullivan County to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law,” said WVCF Warden Richard Brown.
McQuaid had been on the job for just one year.
