More than 300 Clay County kindergartners visited Ivy Tech Community College Terre Haute recently to experience a college campus and enjoy fun, educational activities.

The visit was part of the Clay County Promise initiative in partnership with Clay Community Schools. The Clay County Promise provides matching funds into CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Plan accounts for every kindergartner in Clay County schools.

As part of the initiative, students participate in college and career discovery in the classroom, and visit college campuses. Kindergartners visiting Ivy Tech created robot-powered artwork, cared for teddy bears in the teddy bear clinic, made bracelets to learn computer code and more.

“I think the Clay County Promise is a good thing,” said Jesse Killion, Jackson Township Elementary parent. “I just hoped they would come and have fun today. They really liked the robot challenge and the superhero fitness exercises.”

The Clay County Promise is part of the Promise Indiana initiative, which aims to expand access to 529 college savings accounts, making sure all youth have opportunities to build assets for their futures, and to help communities develop college-going culture. Families contribute an initial $25 to open a CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Plan account. The Clay County Promise makes a triple match contribution of $75 to families who raise an additional $25 from “champion” family members and friends.

“Matching funds are provided by the Clay County Promise, with grant funding from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and Guys Who Give Clay County,” said Tammy Kikta, Clay County Promise program coordinator.

Attendees included students from Clay City Elementary School, East Side Elementary School, Forest Park Elementary School, Jackson Township Elementary School, Meridian Elementary School, Staunton Elementary School and Van Buren Elementary School.
