Vigo County Fair looking for Open Class entrants

The Vigo County Fair Open Class Department is looking for exhibitors.

If you love to bake, enter your favorite cakes, cookies, breads, pies, decorated wedding cakes, and more in the Culinary Department. Exhibitors who make their own barbeque sauce, cole slaw, salad dressings or fudge may want to consider entering items in the Miscellaneous Foods Department. Food preservation items and pickled foods can be entered into the Canning Department.

This year’s Bakers’ Best Contest theme is ‘raisins.’ Contest entries will be accepted July 9 between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the community center at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds.

Gardeners can enter corn, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes and many other vegetables in the Horticulture Department. Apples, berries, cherries, peaches and other fruits can also be entered into this department. You can even enter your largest zucchini, tomato, cabbage or potato into the Largest Contest, measured by weight.

Flowers, houseplants, herbs and arrangements can all be entered in to the Floriculture Department. If you love making jewelry, painting, making ceramics, basketry or working with textile arts, you may enter these items in the Hobby and Crafts Department. Quilters, knitters, crocheters, sewers or needle work experts can enter items in the Needlecraft Department.

If you are a professional, amateur, or junior artist that uses acrylic, oil, water color, pencil, ink, chalk or marker mediums, you may enter these into the Fine Arts Department. Photos can be entered into the Photography Department.

There will be an Open Class BBQ Contest on July 11 in conjunction with the 4-H Barbeque Contest.

There will also be a King Author Flour Banana Bread Baking Contest taking place July 7. Amateur juniors (ages 8-17) and adults (ages 18 and up) may enter.

Fair books with instructions are available at the Vigo County-Purdue Extension office, 275 Ohio St., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. All entries are open to the world and applies to men, women, teenagers and children, including current 4-H members. There are no age, gender, marital status, residency or membership requirements.
