Learn about stained glass design, restoration Nov. 16

Stained glass enthusiasts, architects and those responsible for the care of stained glass may all benefit from an upcoming seminar in the Providence Spirituality and Conference Center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

“The Art and Science of Stained Glass Design, Fabrication and Restoration” will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Presented by Bovard Studio, which recently restored the historic windows in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, the seminar will explore stained glass as an art form and how to identify needed maintenance that will prolong the lifespan of existing stained glass.

Cost for the seminar is $30 and includes lunch and a complimentary DVD copy of the book, “Windows for the Soul.”

Leigh Carter, a Bovard Studio staff member of 20 years, will present the seminar. The first part of the seminar will explore styles of stained glass from historical to modern. It will look at the art of stained glass and how to design stained glass to fit the style of a building.

The second part of the seminar will focus on maintenance of stained glass and will provide a good understanding of a restoration project for those considering one.

“We love designing stained glass, but maintenance is really where people lack understanding. It’s easy to maintain stained glass for 100 or 150 years until it needs an overhaul, but a major overhaul may need to be done in 50 years if it has not been properly maintained,” Carter said.

“People understand that loose bricks mean you need to tuck-point and that missing shingles mean a roof needs repaired. But most people don’t understand the structure of a stained glass window enough to know what to watch for that indicates the need for maintenance,” Carter said.

The seminar qualifies as a continuing education learning unit for the American Institute of Architects.

Carter plans to include a tour of the newly restored windows in the Church of the Immaculate Conception into the day. The windows were designed by Francis Xavier Zettler, who Carter calls “one of the finest artists of 19th century.”

“They are magnificent works of art. That tour alone would be worth the trip,” Carter said.

“What excites me is the discussion and the interest piqued as people think about their own projects. It’s nice meeting people and understanding what they are trying to accomplish,” Carter said of the seminar, that has been presented all over the U.S.

The Bovard Studio was founded in 1971 and today employs national and international artists who create and restore more than 100 stained glass window projects each year. Learn more about Bovard Studio at BovardStudio.com.
