Holocaust survivor Eva Kor to speak at VU

VINCENNES, Ind. — Eva Kor, a survivor of the WWII Auschwitz concentration camp, will speak on Nov. 13, 11 a.m. (EST), at Vincennes University’s Beckes Student Union. The presentation is free and the public is invited.

Kor survived Auschwitz at age 10 with her sister Miriam, as one of the Mengele twins that were used in deadly Nazi experiments from 1944-45. In 1995 she signed a Declaration of Amnesty, forgiving the Nazis for murdering her family, the same year that she founded the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute.

Kor was one of 180 children liberated from the Auschwitz concentration camp, where her parents were killed, at the end of WW II. Eva and her sister were the subjects of painful medical experiments by the notorious Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele. Twins were especially valued for his experiments that included infecting them with diseases.

Born in a small village in Romania, Eva recalls her father and mother listening to the radio and hearing Adolph Hitler shouting his tirades against the Jews. During the late 1930s her father encouraged his wife to immigrate to Israel with their four young children, but she opposed the idea and the family remained in Romania. The family was later deported to Auschwitz.

The CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Terre Haute is dedicated to the Mengele twins who survived the horrible experiments. Kor operates the museum to help people understand what hatred and prejudice can do.

Kor has presented hundreds of lectures since 1977. Media coverage of her life includes cover articles in the New York Times, London Observer, and Parade magazine. She has also been featured on national television network programs, including “Oprah Winfrey,” “60 Minutes,” and “20/20.”

Kor’s publications include Children of the Flames, Megele Twin Stories; The Nazi Doctors and the Nuremberg Code; When Medicine Went Mad; and Echoes from Auschwitz, Dr. Mengele’s Twins: The Story of Eva and Miriam Mozes.

Kor’s awards include in 2005 Sagamore of the Wabash, 2004 Daughters of the American Revolution Americanism Award, and a 2004 Martin Luther King Spirit of Justice Award. She also received an Emmy Award as the co-producer of the video “CANDLES” in 1991.

A veteran of the Israeli Army, Kor holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana State University.
