Saturday seminar to bring nationally known genealogists to Ivy Tech

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Genealogy Society is offering the public a unique opportunity to learn more about the new techniques and methods now available for individuals interested in doing genealogical research on the Internet.

On Saturday, the WVGS will offer an all-day seminar, “On-Line Genealogy: Tracking Your Ancestors Through Space.” The seminar will feature presentations by two nationally known professional genealogists. Dan Poffenberger is a senior content strategist for the Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (familysearch.org). He has been a professional genealogist for 23 years.

The other featured presenter is Thomas MacEntee, a professional genealogist specializing in the use of technology and social media to improve genealogy research and as a way to connect with others in the family history community.

Poffenberger will make presentations on the “Family Search for 2013 and Beyond.” In addition, he will share tips and tricks the pros use when searching records in the Family History Library Catalog.

MacEntee’s presentation will be in the form of a live webinar. During the webinar, participants will learn how to most effectively locate living relatives using Internet search engines and other resources.

This all-day seminar includes lunch (please note any dietary restrictions), and runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the doors opening at 8 a.m. The meeting will be in the Oakley Auditorium at Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley. Parking for the event will be on the west side of the building.

Registration fees are: For WVGS members, $30; nonmembers, $35.

Registration after Wednesday will need to take place at the registration table outside Oakley Hall on the day of the seminar.

There are a number of ways to register for the seminar: (1) Online at www.inwvgs.org; (2) the morning of the seminar; or (3) complete a registration form available at many local libraries.

This seminar offers a unique opportunity to hear nationally known speakers in the field of their genealogical research.

In addition to the professional presentations, there will be opportunities during the day for participants to interact and network with other people interested in genealogy.

Both the beginner as well as the seasoned genealogist will find something of value in this seminar.
