Countryside, Kalorama gardens celebrating opening weekend

MARSHALL, ILL. — Countryside Gardens, owned by Terry and Jennie O’Rourke, and Kalorama Gardens, owned by Steve and Linda Gard, opened for the season this weekend. Both gardens are in Marshall, Ill. Opening days continue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Door prizes and refreshments will be offered. Both gardens will be open daily by chance or appointment throughout the summer months.

Countryside Gardens specializes in hostas, with more than 200 varieties on display in the numerous gardens and more than 100 different varieties for sale. There will also be various types of heuchera (coral bells) and colorful hanging baskets. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful, peaceful country setting;  stroll through the plush gardens; or relax on one of the many benches located throughout the gardens or near the new water garden. Jennie’s homemade lavender bread, cookies and iced tea are famous.

Kalorama Gardens is 1.5 acres with a variety of gardening styles and plants, sun and shade.

There, you can sit by the pond or pause on the bridge. You can view more than 250 varieties of daylilies, many unusual and miniature plants in hypertufa containers, water features, woodland plantings and rock gardens. The gardens also offer whimsical touches and unique outdoor art.

You can expect a choice selection of plants and shrubs. Original painted and ready-to-paint concrete garden leaves will also be available.

This will be the last season Kalorama Gardens is open to the public. Kalorama has expanded its offering of Steve’s daylilies to 83 varieties.

This year, Kalorama has more doubles, spiders and daylilies from its beds, that include hybrids produced by Dr. Wesley Whiteside of Charleston, Ill., some in limited quantities. For more information, visit www.kaloramagardens.com.

To get to Countryside Gardens from Marshall, go east on U.S. 40 to Livingston Road. Turn north and follow the signs. Call 217-822-8589 or 217-251-4983.

Kalorama Gardens is a 15-minute trip west on U.S. 40 from Countryside Gardens. To Kalorama Gardens from Marshall: From the intersection of Illinois 1 and U.S. 40, travel west for 0.8 miles. Turn right (north) on the Clarksville Road and follow the signs, turning right at N. 1500 St. Follow the signs into the subdivision. The gardens are at the owners’ home.
