Genealogy Society to offer beginner’s classes

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Genealogy Society is offering a series of beginning genealogy classes. The series will include six class sessions on: March 28; April 4, 11, 18, and 25; and May 2.

All classes will be at the Vigo County Public Library in the lower level meeting rooms. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with classes running from 6 to 8 p.m. Class size is limited to 30 participants with a fee of $15 per person charged to cover classes and materials.

Participants can expect to learn: how to fill out genealogy charts; how to record and organize information; where to find information to extend a family tree; and how to search online and in repositories.

The course is designed for those who are new to genealogy and family research, genealogy “dabblers” who need additional direction in order to advance their research or researchers who want a refresher course in core research principles.

A different member of the Genealogy Society will teach in their area of expertise each week. Advance registration is required. Registration can be completed online at For more information call (812) 236-8994.

Program on finding records after deaths

The Wabash Valley Genealogy Society will present a free public program entitled “Dying to Help Out, Too” at 6:30 p.m. on March 12.

The program, presented by Ron Darrah, will be in Rooms A, B and C at the Vigo County Public Library. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Darrah will describe ways to discover records on deceased ancestors. Since very few Americans have a probate file after their death, one must use other ways to find records that might provide information about deceased family members.

Darrah, born in West Virginia but an Indiana resident since 1972, earned a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University in 1967. He is the founding executive director of the Genealogical Society of Marion County; head librarian for the GSMC; chairman of the Indiana Genealogical Society affiliate, Society of Civil War Families in Indiana; Patriot Grave chair and genealogist/registrar of the Clarence Cook Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution; a genealogical researcher for more than 20 years; and author of several genealogical publications.
