Ernestine Reed celebrates 100th birthday

Former Vigo County resident Ernestine Reed will observe her 100th birthday June 29, 2013, with friends and relatives.

Cards are welcome and may be mailed to her in care of The Waters of Yorktown, 2000 S. Andrews Road, Yorktown, IN 47396.

The former Ernestine Watson was born June 29, 1913, in the Prairie Creek area where she attended the Church of Christ and the Prairie Creek Baptist Church. In 1930, she won local and state contests earning her the title of Healthiest Girl in Indiana, and later traveled to Chicago with 4-H Agent Orville Redenbacher, where she placed third in the nation.

She moved to Muncie after her marriage to Paul Reed, where they raised their daughter, Nellie Irene Dudley, and to The Waters after his death.

Her daughter still lives in Muncie. Reed also has a sister, Ann Vencel of Bloomington, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Fishing, hunting mushrooms and antiques were other joys in life but bacon, eggs and sausage for breakfast, Reed says, are the secrets to her longevity.
