Abandoned well sealing demonstration set for Sept. 5

Most people don’t give much thought to the problems associated with an abandoned water well, until they make the news.

An abandoned well can pose health and safety hazards, and become a potential route for groundwater contamination if sealed improperly or not sealed at all.

To eliminate the risks and threats, and reduce well owners’ liabilities, it is recommended that abandoned wells be sealed properly.

An abandoned water well sealing demonstration will take place Thursday.

Two water wells, one being a dug well and the other an encased well, will be properly sealed.

The demonstration will begin at 10 a.m. at property owned by the City of Martinsville, Ill. (soon to be Linn Park), and located at Mill and Vine streets. There, a 15-foot dug well will be properly sealed.

Following this demonstration, those attending will go approximately four miles southeast, to Helena Chemical Company (formerly Miller Fertilizer) on the Angling Road. There, a 25-foot encased well will be properly sealed.

In addition to the sealing demonstrations, there will be a short education program to address the concerns of abandoned wells, groundwater quality, well owner liability and sealing requirements.

Sealing abandoned wells not only satisfies legal requirements, but it also aids in protecting groundwater, ensures safety, decreases potential liability for the owner and aids in the aesthetic value of the property.

Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. The event is sponsored by the Clark County Health Department, University of Illinois Extension, the city of Martinsville and Clark County SWCD. Lunch, compliments of Helena Chemical Company, will be served after the educational program to those who attended.

Reservations are requested by Tuesday; call the Clark County Extension Office at 826-5422 or SWCD at 217-382-4123, ext. 3. Or register at
