Make connections Nov. 13 at Coffee with a Cop

A new community program, Coffee with a Cop, will debut Nov. 13 and continue the second Wednesday of each month from 8 to 10 a.m. in The Meeting Grounds Coffee House at 619 Washington Ave.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are offered across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The majority of contact law enforcement has with the public happens during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

Officers from Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Terre Haute Police Department, Indiana State Police and the Indiana DNR Law Enforcement will come together with community members in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee.

The meeting provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the officers’ work in county neighborhoods. It aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members. All are invited to attend.

At the meeting also learn about the Vigo County Triad. The Triad is part of The National Association of Triads, which is a partnership of three organizations — law enforcement, older adults and community groups. The purpose of Triad is to promote older adult safety and to reduce the fear of crime that older adults often experience.

For more information on Coffee with a Cop contact Lori Aplin, registered nurse and Vigo County TRIAD chairwoman, at 812-917-4970 or vigocountytriaddirector@gmail.com.
