Vigo County Fair seeks Open Class exhibitors

TERRE HAUTE — Exhibitors are needed for the Vigo County Fair Open Class Department to showcase their talents or hobbies.

Divisions include canning, culinary, fine arts, floriculture, hobby and crafts, horticulture, miscellaneous foods, needlecraft and photography. From acrylic and oil paintings in the Fine Arts Department to wedding cakes and cookies in the Culinary Department, there’s something for everyone.

The Culinary, Miscellaneous Foods, and Canning Departments include cakes, pies, cookies, breads, barbeque sauce, salsa, salad dressing, divinity, fudge and food preservation items.

Gardeners may enter tomatoes, cabbage, green beans, apples, cherries, peaches, grapes, plums, flowers, houseplants, arrangements, and herbs in the Horticulture or Floriculture departments. There are also largest zucchini, tomato, cabbage and potato contests.

The Hobbies and Crafts Department includes jewelry making, fabric paint crafts, ceramics, basketry and blacksmithing. Needlecraft entries can be quilts, knit or crocheted items, sewn materials or needle work.

Amateur or professional artists may enter acrylic, oil, water color, pencil, ink, chalk or marker mediums to the Fine Arts Department and photos may be entered in the Photography Department.

Three contests are planned. This year’s Baker’s Best Contest theme is “Apricot.” Contest entries are accepted 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 10 at the Community Center (Floriculture) Building on Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. Judging will take place at noon and the entries will be auctioned off at 6:30 p.m. as a fundraiser. The King Arthur Flour Baking Contest has two divisions this year.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie Contest is open to ages 8-17 and the Coffee Cake Contest is open to ages 18 plus and will take place July 8. Entries will be received from noon to 2 p.m. in the Annex (Home & Family Arts/Women’s) Building. Judging will take place at 2 p.m. and prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.

The BBQ contest will be conducted July 12 along with the 4-H BBQ Contest. Set-up begins at 10 a.m.; food must be completed by noon for judging.
