Birds, bees, bats and more at Naturalist Workshops

Purdue Extension Service’s Vermillion County Office is sponsoring an Indiana Master Naturalist Workshop, beginning Aug. 18. The workshop will continue for a total of nine classes, from 6 to 9 p.m. on most Mondays through Oct. 27. Most classes will be in Vermillion County, with three more in Parke County and two in Terre Haute.

One option, “Moon Watching, Studying Birds that Migrate at Night” will be at Turkey Run State Park. Students will learn about astronomy and watch and learn about the fall bird migration through a powerful telescope as they pass by the harvest moon during its peak on Sept. 8.

Additional class topics include “400 Species and Counting: Indiana’s Native Bees and Their Importance as Wildflower Pollinators,” “Indiana Birds,” “Bats and Bat Detecting,” “Wetlands Ecology,” “Invasive, Edible and Medicinal Plants,” “Wildflower Identification,” “Life in the Soil for Naturalists,” “Land Trusts,” “Important Naturalist Authors and the Wilderness of Childhood,” “Archaeology of West Central Indiana” and “Beekeeping for Beginners.” Many of the classes will have an associated field trip or take place outside with hands-on learning.

Some of the experts who will be presenting include Dr. Jim Nardi (University of Illinois), Karen Staub (Master Naturalist), Dr. Ron Weiss (Chipper Woods Bird Observatory and Marion University), Marty Jones (Wabash Valley Audubon Society), Jeff Kiefer (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), Mike Lunsford (Riverton Parke High School), Barbara Tibbets (Turkey Run State Park), Andy Lohrman (Hoosierville Farms). Doctors Russ Stafford, Peter Scott and Joy O’Keefe (Indiana State University) will also speak.

This course is open to all adults who have an interest and would like to learn more about Indiana’s natural resources. Registration is $70 per person or $110 per couple, due by Aug. 1. This covers the costs of all books, materials, park entrances and other fees. The number of participants is limited and will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. A detailed schedule and registration form can be found on the Vermillion County Extension website at www.ag.purdue.edu/counties/vermillion.

For questions or reasonable accommodations to participate in this program contact Phil Cox of the Purdue Extension, a Vermillion County extension educator, at 765-492-5335 or cox119@purdue.edu.
