Dana forest project receives state recognition

On Oct. 16, the Indiana Urban Forest Council recognized the Dana Urban Forest Project as its 2013 Outstanding Project. The award was presented at the IUFC’s annual meeting in Indianapolis. The Dana Urban Forest Project is a joint project of the town of Dana and the Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The project was recognized for making a large impact on the town’s community by organizing widespread support and attracting multiple sponsors. DUFP raised over $34,500 between local donations and two Indiana DNR grants to replant the town of Dana after the installation of a municipal sewer system removed many of its existing trees.

At 8 a.m. on Saturday, the Dana Tree Board will have its fourth community workday to plant an additional 46 trees on the east side of town. Next spring’s planting will complete Phase One of the project, and all of the areas that were disturbed by the construction will be replanted. At that point, Dana will have approximately 210 new trees.

The holes will be dug by machines, but the trees will need to be set and backfilled by hand. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District at 765-492-3705.

The community workdays are supported by a lunch from the Dana Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary, along with equipment from Zimmerman Farm Nursery and Ceres Solutions.
