Register for cover crops, no-till program

Spend the morning of Aug. 20 learning how to use cover crops and conservation cropping systems to improve soil’s health. The program, “Cover Crops and No-Till: Taking the Next Step,” will be at the American Legion Hall in Kingman. The program is free, but reservations are required.

Anyone interested in attending should contact Lori Galloway, Fountain County Soil and Water Conservation District, at 765-762-6844 ext. 3; reservations will be accepted through Tuesday. Program participants will be eligible for PARP ($10 charge), CCA and CCH credits.

Fountain, Parke, Montgomery and Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation districts are hosting the field day. A Clean Water Indiana grant and local sponsors are funding the program. Field day attendees will have a chance to win a free registration to the 2014 National No-Tillage Conference in Springfield, Ill., in January.

The morning will begin at 7:30 with breakfast. Following this, speakers will be discussing “Taking The Next Step” in “Controlling Cover Crops/Winter Annual Weeds in the Spring,” “Using Cover Crops for Improved Soil Health and Profits” and “Using Small Grains to Improve Soil Health.” Speakers include Mike Werling, CCSI Hub farmer from Decatur; Betsy Bower, Ceres Solutions agronomist; Ed Britton with Tony Asher, Putnam County farmer and farm manager, and Bryan Overstreet, Jasper County Extension educator. The program will conclude before noon.

For more information, contact Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District at 765-492-3705 or email meg-leader@iaswcd.org.
