Look for lost pets at Humane Shelter

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Humane Shelter always is filled to the brim with misplaced dogs and cats. If you are searching for your lost pet, go to the shelter and see if it is there. A wandering pet is sometimes picked up by an animal control officer and brought to the shelter. While you’re there, fill out a Lost Pet Report (bring a photo of your pet, if possible) and check back often (every four days). The Humane Society holds each animal for five days. It is then put up for adoption, sent to rescue, or destroyed. Please do not depend on the shelter employees to identify your pet and contact you. They try very hard but a match is not always made. It’s important for you to come in and check for your dog or cat as our description may not exactly match yours.

When searching for your lost pet, be sure to take along a photo, if you have one. Check under your neighbor’s porch and shrubs and ask them to check their garages or outbuildings in case your pet accidentally got locked in. Create “lost pet” fliers that include your pet’s picture and ask permission to post one at local dog runs or parks, pet supply stores, grooming salons, veterinary offices, commercial establishments, lampposts, trees and around schools. Post it heavy in the areas where you think your pet was lost and in busy pedestrian sections of town.

Send e-mails that include information about your lost pet to friends, family, and to local animal message boards. Ask them to forward it to anyone that might have any information about your pet. Call the Tribune-Star (812) 231-4200 and place a Lost Pet ad; the good folks there will run a FREE Lost and Found ad for five days. Call the Vigo County Board of Health (812-462-3289) if you think your pet was hit by a car.
