Program to offer tips on researching land ownership

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley Genealogy Society will offer a presentation by Betty Warren, “Land Ownership Search: Admire Acres,” on Nov. 12. The program is free and will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Vigo County Public Library, with doors opening at 6 p.m.

The presentation is meant to be a practical application of resource information from wills, probate records, deeds, maps, surveys, land office treasury warrants, tax lists, census data, cemetery readings, chancery and equity court documents, and marriage records to determine the geographic location of a specific tract of land by tracing the owners.

The method of research demonstrated in the presentation uses a tract of land in Kentucky as an example, but it can be applied to parcels of land anywhere.

Warren’s interest in genealogy started at age 9 when she received her first Bible, which included a family tree from her grandmother. Through the years her interest in genealogy grew. In 1988, she completed courses and received certification as a Professional Genealogist. Warren has presented numerous sessions to genealogy societies, DAR chapters and historical societies.

Warren has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and currently works as a volunteer at the Johnson County Museum of History in the Genealogy Department. In 1991, she established her own family history research business, Be It Remembered.
