Harvest days are dragging on in Wabash Valley

Special to the Tribune-Star

Harvest days are dragging on in the area. The delayed crop development coupled with cool, wet weather conditions are making harvest conditions frustrating.

The Wabash Valley wasn’t looking to meet the goal of having soybeans harvested and half of the corn crop in by the first of November.

Corn moisture content is averaging pretty much what it did at this time in 1992 (the June frost year).

Stalk health and grain quality in corn are creating concerns about crop condition.

Stressful conditions for plants and humans this harvest look to be the norm.

Please keep your harvest safe and make sure you handle equipment and grain safely.

Purdue Extension resources are available for dealing with diseased corn and the issue of testing for grain toxins.

Contact us at (812) 236-6039 if you have any questions or needs during harvest.

State Nursery Tree Orders

Tree seedlings for conservation plantings are being ordered for spring delivery. The lottery for order has passed, but you can still order trees and hope they are available. Minimum order is 100 trees per species with a cost in the range of $26 to $40, depending on age and specie.

You can contact the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Nursery Program at (812) 358-3621 by phone or go to www.dnr.IN.gov/forestry.

Asian Lady Beetles

We enjoyed having the Asian Lady Beetles munch on our soybean aphids this summer, but now they have left the fields and are marching on our homes.

Purdue Entomology has a great publication on Asian Lady Beetles: You can go to ces.purdue.edu or contact our office for a hard copy.
