Vigo County CASA receives $40K grant

Vigo County Court Appointed Special Advocates has received a $40,000 grant from the National CASA Association in Seattle.

These funds were used to hire one additional staff person, which will enable CASA to better serve the 108 local sworn volunteers who in turn are serving the 220 children in Vigo County’s foster care system.

CASA uses specially trained community volunteers who are appointed by a judge to serve children entering into the welfare system due to neglect and/or abuse by their caregivers. CASA volunteers are the voice of the child, speaking up for the best interest of that child throughout the juvenile court proceedings.

They do this by consistently visiting the child to ensure that their most urgent needs don’t go unmet and that the children don’t linger in foster care.

Information about becoming a CASA volunteer is available by calling Nikki Fuhrmeister, CASA director, at the CASA office at (812) 231-5658 or by visiting the Web at www.vigocounty.in.gov/CASA.
