Bridge: Oct. 18, 2009

Watching the President’s Cup Golf Tournament over the weekend, I was not familiar with the scoring systems for the various formats of golf they played. Time after time, a player would be putting and miss a putt with his ball two feet away from the cup and he would scoop up his ball. Then all players would advance to the next hole. It seemed to me they were extremely generous to concede with such a long putt still to be holed. But then, I was totally in the dark about the scoring system.

Master point races at our duplicate bridge club are more my speed. With three months left in the year, it looks like a “gimme” in both the male and female contests at the Terre Haute Bridge Center. Laura Bright is 25 points ahead of Sharon Strassler in the women’s division. Fred Ervin has a 47 point lead over Tom Roberts. The next three women all have high scores. They are Nancy Hanley, Sue May and Jane Gormong. Pat Price leads the rest of the top 30 who are Tana Holt, Diane Scott, Gloria Trader, Sharon Winters, Noreen Bryant, Joanna Hebermehl, Phyllis Peters, Margie Kintz, Pat Koger, Connie Shattuck, Mary Lunsford, Carolyn Steinbaugh, Mona Sternfeld, Joan Chervenko, Judy Harris, Sharon Mason, Arlene Luchsinger, Mary Alice Spahr, Linda Easton, Gretchen Weston, Ruth Ann Tooloose, Marty Cornelius, Margaret Oyer and Nancy Shriner.

Don Reuland leads the rest of the men’s roster. They are Jim Gormong, Milt Van Reed, Don Florida, Richard Easton, Frank DeSanto, Floyd McWilliams, Jim Jennings, John Clark, George Woodason, Alan Sackrider, Henjin Chi, Charles Parks, Don Lucas, Mark Greenwell, Rick Kleinheksel, John Massman, Mark Minar, Charles Bryan, Dan Dorney, Dr. Jayesh Ramolia, Dan Scott, Bill Shriner, Mel Sinn, Marvin Kasrich and David Halsted.
