World Food Day, ‘Canstruction’ events set at Indiana State
Special to the Tribune-Star
TERRE HAUTE —
As part of World Food Day on Thursday, Indiana State University students will participate in a full day of activities, including a “Canstruction” food drive and competition.
The day focuses upon world hunger and ISU’s student groups plan to address the problem in the Wabash Valley with the food drive.
Before those donations make their way to the Catholic Charities food bank to be distributed, students will create designs using the canned food for the Canstruction event. At 7 a.m. Thursday in Dede Plaza, student organizations will begin setting up their exhibits into designs.
Each exhibit will be evaluated by a panel of judges and prizes will be awarded.
“The last time we collected a little over 1 ton,” said Rao Ivaturi, associate professor of family and consumer science. “This time, the students upped the ante and said 2 tons.”
The food collection comes at a critical time for Catholic Charities, Ivaturi said.
“Their supplies are really, really low,” he said.
After the Canstruction event ends at 11:30 a.m., the World Food Day teleconference “Choices for a Warm and Hungry Planet” begins at noon in Dede III of the Hulman Memorial Student Union. During the teleconference, an international panel of experts will discuss the effects of high food prices and climate changes upon the world’s poor.
At 1 p.m., a documentary “Global Warming — The Signs and Science” will be shown in Dede III.
The documentary will be followed by a national question call-in for panelists to answer.
