Jackson-Hale reunion scheduled for Oct. 21


The descendants of Elmer-Mary Jackson and Ira-Nora Hale will hold a family reunion Oct. 21 at Brown County State Park Shelter House in Nashville, Ind.

Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. Please bring a covered dish. A display table will be set up for anyone’s special talents or art. Also, a white elephant auction will be held; bring an article for it and we can keep it in the family.

Quilting class set for Saturday in Bloomfield


Charlotte Humerickhouse will show how to construct a Christmas Coaster in a foundation piecing quilting class scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Community Room of the Bloomfield Public Library.

Fabric packets are included in the class price of $20. Students need to bring their own sewing machine, thread, pins, scissors and seam ripper. If possible, also bring a rotary cutter and mat and a 12-inch quilting ruler. To register, call (812) 384-4125.

Play therapy support group set to meet


A play therapy peer support group has been formed to discuss play therapy ideas and requirements to become a Registered Play Therapist. The group will meet on the first Thursday of each month at the Vigo County Public Library from noon to 1. Contact Diane Smith at (812) 232-2144 for additional information or questions.

Church plans ‘Shop for a Cure’ event


The Cross Tabernacle Church on Seventh Street in Terre Haute will stage a “Shop for a Cure” event Nov. 3 to raise money for Relay for Life, a fundraiser of the American Cancer Society.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be more than 10 vendors, including Pampered Chef, Avon, Mary Kay, Home Interiors, Cookie Lee Jewelry and more to help with your holiday shopping.

Lunch may also be purchased for $5 (1/2 chicken salad sandwich, soup, slice of pie and a drink (donated by the Grand Traverse Pie Company).

All proceeds will go to the "Just Smile Every Mile" Relay Team.

In five years, our team has raised more than $10,000 for the cause.

Eat at Applebee’s and support families


Help support children and families in Vigo County by eating at Applebee’s! The Vigo County CARE Council is hosting a “Dining to Donate” event at the south Applebee's location all day Oct. 30.

Applebee’s will donate 15 percent of the food bill to the CARE Council for diners who present a Dining to Donate coupon when ordering. The Dining to Donate Coupon can be downloaded from the CARE Council Web site at www.carecouncilin.org.

CARE Council plans pancake breakfast


The CARE Council is hosting a Pancake Breakfast at the south Applebee’s on Nov. 3 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

Enjoy a filling meal that is fulfilling also – as you help us raise funds to give families access to resources that will help them to thrive rather than merely survive. The CARE Council is composed of a diverse group of volunteers that have come together for the purpose of promoting collaboration to ensure the safety and well-being of children and families. Current projects include the Family Connections Web site, an online guide to child/family resources in Vigo County, and the Year of the Child, which will promote a different issue related to child/family well-being each month during 2008.

The following events will take place at the Main Vigo County Public Library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

• Caught in the Middle: How “Sandwich Generation” Women Make It Work with Sharon Langlotz, Indiana Commission for Women. 12:10 – 12:50 p.m. Thursday

Many middle-aged women are still parenting, caring for grandchildren and taking care of parents and aging relatives and working. This workshop will examine the reasons that this is a “sandwich” generation, and will look at how some women truly manage to do it all.

• Tribute to Hoagy Carmichael from 12:10 – 12:50 p.m. Oct. 25

Join Marylee Hagan, director of the Historical Museum, as she reviews the highlights of Carmichael's life. Pianist Doug Brooks and singer Rachel McClelland will perform Hoagy’s favorites. The Hoagy Carmichael Sculpture/Educational Tour will formally open this weekend at the Indiana Theatre. Listen to the life and music of this famous composer and then view the sculpture.

Lunch can be purchased for $7 from Savories including hoagie sandwich, fruit salad and a drink. To reserve a lunch, please call Community Services at (812) 232-1113, ext. 281 or 282 by Oct. 22.
