Stout to celebrate 96th birthday


Clifford Stout, who will be 96 on Oct. 12, will celebrate his birthday with his wife, Betty, also 96, during an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the dining room at Peddle Park, 1616 S. 25th St.

Relatives and friends from Faith Wesleyan Church are invited. It is requested that gifts be omitted but cards are welcome and may be sent to 2801 S. 27th St., Terre Haute, IN 47803.

Hosts for the event will be the couple’s daughter, Naomi Burgess, and son, Fred Stout.



Authors to speak on ‘Three Finger’ Brown


Authors Cindy Thomson and Scott Brown will return Oct. 12-13 to Rockville, the home of the legendary pitching ace Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, to speak about Brown.

The authors will sign books in the area where Brown grew up in Indiana at the Rockville Covered Bridge Festival on the Parke County Historical Society Grounds.

Fred Massey, great-nephew of the legendary Cubs pitcher, will visit.



Vendors needed for holiday bazaar

Vendors are needed for Beta Sigma Phi’s Annual Holiday Bazaar, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 1 in Linton High School Auditeria, North Main Street, Linton.

Wabash Valley man illustrates book


The book “Natives Along the Wabash” is now available, written by Sheryl Hartmand and illustrated by Steve Tucker, president of the Sullivan County Historical Society.

The book has 128 illustrated pages and features a coloring and activity book, history to read, critical thinking activities, biographies and resources and more. The cost is $14.95 retail. Information in this book also is used in educational programs developed for classrooms.

Valley man’s book presented at program


Marshall, Ill.’s own Dr. George Mitchell had finished a second book that was being edited at the time of his death in 2006.

The new book, titled “Memories and Reflections of a Country Doctor,” will be available for the first time at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Marshall Public Library. Mitchell’s daughter, Linda Miller of Norman, Okla., will be on hand to talk about her father’s experiences with writing his recollections of childhood, family, their family trips to Florida, and the many changes he saw during his lifetime.

The paperback book will be available for purchase at the library program.
