Valley photographers participate in annual TREES Contest

Special to the Tribune-Star

The TREES 2007 Photography Contest sponsors, judges and contestants with their families and friends gathered July 19 at the Vigo County Public Library for the Contest Awards Ceremony.

From a field of approximately 75 Wabash Valley photographers, first, second and third place awards, along with five Honorable Mention awards, were given in each of two divisions — the Professional Division and the Adult Amateur Division.

Also, a People’s Choice Award was determined by people who visited the exhibit. They decided and voted for their favorite.

The theme of this year’s contest was “People Need Trees.” It was interpreted in a different way by every photographer.

Winners in the Professional Division were Brendan Kearns: first place for “Teeth Need Toothpick,” and second place for “Dead People Need Dead Trees,” and LaRysa Marietta: third place for “The Swinging Tree.”

Winners in the Adult Amateur Division were Jean Mausel: first place for “Hammock on Hilton Head,” Geraldine Market: second place for “Cane in Hand,” and Holli Scott: third place for “Tire Swing.”

The People’s Choice Award went to Bill Berry for “A Break in the Shade.”

The winning photos were critiqued by the judges to show technical merit, impact and interpretation of the theme.

The theme for next year’s contest is “Trees in Autumn Glory.”
