City artists receive grants from Arts Commission

Special to the Tribune-Star

INDIANAPOLIS The Indiana Arts Commission announced today that two Region 6 (Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties) artists are among 42 throughout the state to receive career development assistance through the agency’s Individual Artist Project grants for Fiscal Year 2009.

In Terre Haute, artists Mary Kramer and Sala Wong both won in visual arts.

“This year, more than 200 Hoosier artists competed for just over 40 available grants,” said IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci. “These artists not only seek to expand their careers and test new creative limits for themselves, they advance Indiana’s reputation for inspiring and nurturing the development of great arts and artists.”

Earlier this year volunteer citizen peer panels, convened by the IAC, reviewed project proposals in visual arts, photography, multi-arts, crafts, dance, music, literature, theatre, media arts and design arts.

Panelists scored each artist’s application based on the quality of the work, impact the proposed work would have on the artist’s career or community, and the likelihood the proposed project could be completed within the specified grant period.

The grants were approved June 13 during the Commission’s quarterly business meeting in New Albany.

Funded artists were eligible to receive grants of up to $2,000.
