Bridge column: May 18, 2008

The Terre Haute Bridge Center honors top players in various categories at the end of each quarter. Recent honorees were Laura Bright for the top female; Fred Ervin, top male; Tom Roberts, top 999er; Carolyn Steinbaugh, top 299er; and Margie Kintz, top 49er and 99er. These standings were for Jan. 1-March 31.

Last week we reported the standings among the men and women. This week we will show the top 30 in the 999er division. Tom Roberts still leads with Nancy Hanley, George Woodason, Tana Holt, Noreen Bryant, Diane Scott and Don Reuland all sporting double-digit winnings. Sharon Winters, Phyllis Peters and Mary Lunsford are all on the cusp of joining the Master-Pointers above. Margie Kintz leads the rest of the top 30: Carolyn Steinbaugh, Gloria Trader, John Clark, Connie Shattuck, Joan Chervenko, Jim Dickey, Rick Kleinheksel, Arlene Luchsinger, Charles Parks, Mona Sternfeld, Jim Jennings, Sharon Mason, Martie Cornelius, Walter Sanders, Ann Kleinheksel, Maggie Oyer, Floyd McWilliams, Dr. Jayesh Ramolia and Susan McCarthy.

The Bridge Center will be the local site for the Worldwide Bridge Game at 1 p.m. June 7. Local players will play the identical hands being played all around the world at nearly the same time at near-identical places. Local winners will earn master points based on their standings locally. Then these results will be e-mailed to the U.S. coordinator who will relay the results to the mainframe computer in Europe. If they do well nationally and worldly, they will be awarded more master points based on an expanded field.

A most unique opportunity for bridge players to rate themselves. This is something that cannot be duplicated in golf, poker or most any other form of human endeavor.
