Terre Haute North freshman takes honor

Mallory Howard of Terre Haute was chosen as Jr. Miss Indiana Job’s Daughters on April 12.
She is the daughter of Sonya and Doug Howard and a freshman at Terre Haute North Vigo High School, where she also plays softball.
Howard, also Sr. Princess for Bethel 2 in Terre Haute, will now represent Indiana for the 2008-09 year.

'Swinging into Summer’ show set

St. George Orthodox Church is hosting a style show on May 14 in the St. George Social Center at 1900 S. Fourth St.
Macy’s Department Store is furnishing fashions that will be modeled by women, men, teens and children. Several of the models are local personalities.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with light hors d’ oeuvres provided. Specialty drinks will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $12 each or $90 for a reserved table of eight.

Clay County Historical Society plans meeting

The Clay County Historical Society’s monthly meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the lower level of the museum on National Avenue in Brazil. Speaker David Felstein will present a program on the “History of Motor Sports.”
Felstein, who has been involved in several facets of auto racing most of his life, will share his love of racing with the society.
The speaker for the June program will be society member Ken Turner, who will present a program on Orville Redenbacher.

Booster Seat bonanza on May 9

A booster seat give-away will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday in Washington School, 1201 S. 13th St. Booster seats will be given away to needy families with children under the age of 8. Any family in the Wabash Valley may receive a seat. One seat per family. Limited seats are available and will be first-come, first served.
Sponsors of this event are Wabash Valley Mortgage Bankers, Multiple Listing Service, the Terre Haute Area Association of Realtors, Apartments Owners and Managers Association of Terre Haute, Home Builders Associations, Terre Haute Police Department, Sam’s Club, Vigo County School Corporation and Breakfast Optimist.

Program plans Senior Banquet for May 14

The Community Works Skills Training Program of the Covered Bridge Special Education District will be sponsoring the 5th Annual Senior Banquet from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 14 at Holiday Inn.
The banquet will recognize the 72 high school senior who participated in the training program during the 2007-08 school year. Various employers who have partnered with the program will also be recognized at the banquet.
The program is a partnership among area businesses, not-for-profit agencies and the member school districts within the Covered Bridge Special Education District, including Rockville Community School Corp., Southwest Parke Community School Corp., South Vermillion Community School Corp. and the Vigo County School Corp.
The mission of the program is to provide community-based training experiences for students who desire to be employed after high school.

Vigo Library seeking teen volunteers

The Vigo County Public Library is seeking teen volunteers to assist with the Summer Reading Program. Teens going into grades 7-12 next fall should plan to attend an information night to learn more about the library’s Teen Volunteer program and opportunities. The information nights will be at the main library from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and May 21. Please call the Young People’s Department at (812) 232-1113, ext. 294 for information. No registration is necessary.
Beginning Thursday, applications and a list of tasks and times will be available at all library locations. Applications will be accepted until schedules are complete.
Visit each library location where you want to work and sign up, beginning May 22.

Senior Citizens Picnic planned for May 30

The Area Day Senior Citizens Picnic sponsored by Area 7 Agency on Aging and Disabled will take place May 30 in Forest Park in Brazil. Talk with about 400 seniors from the Wabash Valley in a reserved space under the pavilion that includes a table and two box lunches. The cost is $110. Table covering, chairs, display items and give-a-way items are at the participant’s discretion. The deadline to reserve display booth space at this year’s picnic is Friday.
The picnic runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., sunshine or rain. Booth sponsors are asked have their displays set up by 9:30 a.m. To reserve booth space, contact Linda Chesher at (812) 238-1561, extension 229 or lchesher@westcentralin.com.

Galloway to celebrate her 80th birthday

Virginia Galloway of Terre Haute will celebrate her 80th birthday during an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday in Collett Park Pavilion.
Friends and relatives are invited. It is requested that gifts be omitted, but cards are welcome and may be mailed to her at Apartment 308, Wyndmoor Assisting Living at 1465 E. Crossing Blvd., Terre Haute, IN 47802.
Galloway was born May 11, 1928, in Terre Haute. She and her late husband Paul Galloway formerly lived in North Terre Haute and later in Fort Harrison Villa. She is retired from Alcan Rolled Product and a member of Wayne Newton American Legion Post 346 Auxiliary. Galloway has three children, Steve Kerr and Libby of Terre Haute, Terri Dodson and Tom of Lakeland, Fla., and Jim Galloway and Cheryl of Jasonville. She also has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Parke Chamber sponsors food drive

The Parke County Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring a community food drive to benefit the Parke County Food Pantry during the month of May. Most nonperishable food items are acceptable. Currently the most needed items are breakfast cereals and other breakfast foods, macaroni and cheese, boxes of facial tissues, toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste and laundry detergents. The donation boxes will be located at the following Rockville locations:

• G&M Ace Hardware
• G&M Variety
• Xpress Mart (Valero)
• Old National Bank
• First Financial Bank-Main Office and Downtown Branch
• Rockville Public Library
• Fifth/Third Bank

Other locations include the First Financial Bank Branch in Montezuma, First Financial Bank Branch in Marshall, Rosedale Red & White in Rosedale, and the Fountain Trust Co. in Kingman.
