Bathe your dog for a cause at PetSmart
Dog owners are invited to participate in “RapidBath for Charity” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday in the PetSmart store parking lot at 3680 S. U.S. 41.
Participants can bathe their dogs for free using the HydroSurge RapidBath three-minute pet bathing system. For every bath given with the HydroSurge RapidBath system, Jarden Consumer Solutions will donate $5 up to a maximum $5,000 nationwide to PetSmart Charities as it continues to support local welfare agencies, including Rescue Farm.
PetSmart Charities Spring National Adoption Event runs Friday through May 4, when it joins local animal welfare agencies to provide adoption opportunities for more than 14,600 homeless pets across the nation and Canada.
More dogs, cats and small pets will be available for adoption than any other time of the year. Call PetSmart for event hours.
‘Legend Gala, Ball’ planned for Friday
Mary L. Nelson will be feted next weekend during fundraising events in Terre Haute.
Nelson has retired after 41 years at Bemis Co. Inc. because of health reasons.
A “Legend Gala” will begin Friday with a wine and cheese meet and greet at 5:30 p.m. in the Best Western Inn & Suites at 3053 S. U.S. 41.
A semi-formal dinner and “Legend Ball” will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Booker T. Washington Community Center at 1101 S. 13th St. The eight-piece show band, 675, will perform after the dinner and program.
Gospel singers will entertain at a brunch from 9 a.m. to noon May 4 in the community center.
A $20 donation is requested for any single event or $30 for the entire weekend. To make reservations, contact Gail Howell at (812) 234-2503 or Nelson at (812) 235-1822.
Instead of gifts, a wishing well will be on-site for any other donations. All proceeds will benefit the Mary L. Nelson Healthcare Fund.
Pond management workshop on Saturday
The Bi-State Agriculture Programs group, a collaboration of Purdue Extension and University of Illinois Extension, will host a Pond Management Workshop on Saturday in Prairie Creek Park.
Registration will begin at 11:45 a.m., with lunch beginning at noon. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. and concludes at 3.
Three important topics of pond management will be discussed. A topic of concern to many pond owners is weed control. Purdue University aquatic weed specialist Carole Lembi will teach basic principles of pond weed control. Dave Shiley, Natural Resources educator with the University of Illinois Extension — Champaign Center will present concepts of healthy fish as related to healthy ponds. The final discussion of the day will feature Jim Luzar, Purdue Extension educator – Montgomery County who will present pond design and maintenance.
The cost for the program, which includes materials and lunch, is $15. Humane Society hosts ‘Pets and Petunias’
The Parke-Vermillion County Humane Society is having its fifth annual “Pets and Petunias” plant/bake sale May 17 at the Fairview Park in Clinton at Fourth and Washington streets.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plants include perennials, herbs, grasses, trees, ground covers, hostas, bedding plants … Also, birdhouses and other garden-related items will be for sale.
A bake sale is also planned. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will offer a $1,000 matching donation on proceeds generated from the bake sale. Fresh coffee will be offered, compliments of Something’s Brewing.
Special guests at the sale will be in need of a good home. Also, Jack Shannon of Sit Means Sit will demonstrate dog obedience throughout the sale.
The Humane Society is in need of plants, baked goods and garden-related items. For pots or assistance in digging up and/or maintaining the plants until the sale, call 832-7575. Baked goods can be dropped off the morning of the sale. All proceeds go to the shelter to improve the lives of our animals. Last year the plant sale generated more than $5,000 for the shelter.

4-H leaders taking orders for geraniums
The Parke County 4-H Junior Leaders are taking orders for red and salmon (coral) colored geraniums.
The public may place orders with any Parke County 4-H Junior Leader or call the Parke County Extension Office at (765) 569-3176. For those who are unfamiliar with the Parke County 4-H Junior Leaders, the club is a very active club and is planning some great events for 2008. The patronage that the club receives from the 4-H geranium sales will help support the youth program and allow them to broaden their abilities in leadership, character and community service. A portion of the funds will contribute to the overall 4-H scholarships that go to many 4-H’ers each year.
Plants are $1.25 each and will be delivered just in time for Mothers Day, May 11.
