Valley Life briefs: March 16, 2008

Alana Slater takes Ms. Wabash Valley title

Alana Slater of Pimento has been awarded the title of Ms. Wabash Valley, for U.S.A. Productions Inc. — producers of the nationally recognized Dream Girls U.S.A. Pageant Program.

She will enjoy a fun year of making appearances and being involved in her community through appearances and volunteerism. As well as representing the Wabash Valley, she will vie for one of two $10,000 savings bonds that are awarded each year.

The Dream Girls U.S.A. Program is for girls ages 4 and older and offers separate age groups in which to participate for on-stage modeling events and a spokesmodel event that enhances their public speaking ability. This program introduces and promotes a strong interactive community service participation.

Each year, more than $300,000 in scholarships, savings bonds, cash awards, prizes and awards are given at the local, state and national levels. For more information, call the local state director at (812) 382-4174, or visit www.dreamgirlsusapageant.com, or contact the local office to sponsor a queen or book a queen for a special promotional appearance.

Rosedale woman to celebrate 85 years

A surprise celebration for Bertha Frazier’s 85th birthday is scheduled 4:30 to 8 p.m. March 29 in the Rosedale firehouse.

Hosts will be Frazier’s children.

It is requested that gifts be omitted, but cards are welcome and can be mailed to P.O. Box 398, Rosedale, IN 47874.

DNR conducting fish community survey

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is conducting a comprehensive fish community survey at the Dugger Unit of Greene-Sullivan State Forest this year.

The angler creel survey is part of a study that began March 3, and will run through October. A DNR creel clerk will be stationed at various lakes at the southwest Indiana property to conduct brief interviews as anglers end their fishing trips.

Angler participation is a vital part of this study. Interview data allow biologists to evaluate both the harvest and the catch-and-release of game species at these lakes. Survey results enable biologists to better manage fish resources.

Along with the creel survey, a spring muskie survey and a general fish community survey will be conducted at the Dugger Unit throughout spring and summer.
