Redneck Quaker: Mascari gets thrills from turkey hunting

TERRE HAUTE — Annie Mascari is a beautiful, vibrant, 26-year-old lady that loves the outdoors.

She comes from a large family of four brothers and a sister and lives the teachings of good family values.

Olivia Rightly let me know that I “should talk to my teacher at St. Pats School, Ms. Mascari, because she’s taken a turkey.”

As I shook Annie’s hand, I could feel the energy she has for life. As proof, the first time she went up in an airplane, she jumped out of it!

She’s also quite the hunter. Mascari picked up a used PSE bow for $30, one for a left-hander because her left eye is dominate for shooting. The Page Arrows are her choice for broadheads.

In 2008, her hunting buddy took a nice gobbler while they sat in a blind and that fueled the fire for Annie. They went to breakfast and picked up two more friends to tag along in Greene County.

They were walking and talking with their calls when a gobble came to their ears, so they sat down, put a decoy out and waited. One person with the gun, another video camera and the calling, yes, one was watching.

As the gobble got close, Annie shouldered her single-shot Winchester 28-gauge with the gobbler hanging up then walking away.

I asked if she liked to use a pump shotgun and she said “One shot is all you need!”

In a few minutes, two more gobblers responded to her left and she thought ‘Yes’ game on! To her surprise four gobblers came to the decoy, strutting. She just about waited too long when they started strutting away. Her buddy said “Shoot” and when the hammer dropped three friends went running out after the turkey like three starved coyotes.

Mascari did her job and was in shock from taking her first turkey that sported two beards. And they got it on video! They looked like kangaroos jumping around high fiving.

Bird No. 2 was harvested with her bow and arrows. In the fall of 2012, Mascari set up on a corn field by herself, when about 20 hens came feeding past. A shot was offered and she took it at 15 yards and, with her being in the open, she couldn’t believe they didn’t see her. The hen dropped and the others still didn’t realize what happened.

Annie claimed her trophy and called her Mom, Gina Mascari. She said with a big loving smile, Mom said “That’s my girl!” Gina calls her daughter, Annie Oakley, who was a crack shot back in the frontier days.

With great affection, Annie said that two of her brothers are in the Marines and the Navy. When they heard the news I think it scarred their manhood for a little sister to take a turkey with a bow.

She said there’s nothing like sitting at the dinner table with family and a turkey in the center of the table so I could say “Eat up, this one’s on me.”

Annie said when she gets married one day; the honeymoon will not be lying on a beach someplace. It will be with a bow and arrow in hand, setting in a hunting blind in Africa.

Annie, you are a wonderful inspiration for one and all, you are truly a lady of the outdoors.
