Clay Theatre to present ‘The Nerd’ May 2-3

Clay Community Theatre will present the soup-and-sandwich theater production “The Nerd” on May 2 and 3, at U.S. 40 and Walnut Street in Brazil. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 7:15.

The play follows an aspiring architect in Terre Haute named Willum, who has often told his friends about the debt he owes Rick Steadman. Rick is a fellow ex-GI, who Willum has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. Willum has written Rick to say that he will always have his gratitude, and is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment.

Willum’s delight soon fades, though, as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd” — a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. As Rick overstays his welcome, the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating ways to rid himself of his guest, and the play ends with a surprising “twist.”

Tickets to “The Nerd” are $15, available by calling Lisa Bevers at 812-442-6909. A reservation and prior payment are required.
