Shawnee Theatre offers up story of two Little League coaches

‘Rounding Third’ opens today

Special to the Tribune-Star

BLOOMFIELD — The Shawnee Theatre’s third show of its 53rd season is “Rounding Third” by Richard Dresser.

The story is about the journey of two Little League coaches through an entire season, from their first tentative meeting to the climactic championship game.

The audience is the stand-in for the team, so the coaches speak directly to the audience about competition, character, punctuality, and the importance of wearing the right equipment.

This show will feature Doug Johnson as Don and Bradford Sadler as Michael. Johnson originally played the role in Indianapolis at the Phoenix Theatre.

He ably gives a nod to the stereotypes basic to the character, then gets down to the hard work of adeptly spinning from them Don’s humanity, evolving from a coach of blustering arrogance to a man whose painful rendezvous with the verities of life gives the play much of its poignancy.

“I chose this play for our 53rd season because there is a rich history of Little League baseball here in Greene County and I think this show captures that tradition in an original and refreshing way,” said Kevin Lee Guthridge, producing artistic director. “I’m very excited to bring a seasoned cast in for this show, including Indianapolis-based actor Doug Johnson, who has worked as an actor for over 20 years now and also played this role in the Phoenix Theatre’s production of the same play.”

“Rounding Third” will open at 8 p.m. today and runs through Sunday with a total of four performances. Performances at Shawnee will continue at 8 p.m. each Thursday through Saturday  and at 2 p.m. Sundays throughout the summer.

Tickets are $14 for adults ($16 for musicals) or $7 for children ($8 for musicals).
