New Play Festival continues through Saturday at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State University theater department is hosting its New Play Festival through Saturday. The department will stage three new productions during the annual showcase, themed “Intriguing Journeys.”

Indiana State students wrote the scripts for all of the plays, on subjects including finding love and freedom amidst insanity, a road trip to the Prudhomme Cookoff and survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

Playwrights Charles Adams and Michael Bell are junior theater majors concentrating in playwriting. The directors — Elizabeth Bumgarner, TK Poff and Trevor Hanson — are senior theater majors concentrating on directing.

Works featured:

“Dreams of Love,” by Michael Bell, directed by Trevor Hanson.

After being traumatized by Eric, Julie finds herself controlled by the thought of him.

She is sent to a psychiatric ward where her condition is worsening when she falls in love with William, the man in the room next to her — a man she has never seen. As she falls deeper in love with William, her projection of Eric becomes more sinister.

“No Regrets,” by Charles Adams, directed by TK Poff.

A road trip combines a Catholic priest and two of his childhood friends as they try to get to the “Prudhomme Cook-off,” only to have encounters along the way that make the trip unforgettable.

“Our Garden,” by Michael Bell, directed by Elizabeth Bumgarner.

In this powerful play, John Doe travels through a post-apocalyptic world, which tests his knowledge and spirit as he tries to survive. Fate throws him together with the young and innocent Eden, their unlikely friendship threatened by the presence of the Dreamer and his cult of Sleepers. John must make sacrifices in order to restore what has been lost for 50 years. In the end all anyone can hold onto is hope.

Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in New Theater, Indiana State University. Tickets are $10, free to students with an ISU ID.
